Science, mathematics, and engineering (SME), are vital disciplines to our national defense, therefore a formal Department of Defense (DoD) Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship has been established by the Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act. The purpose is to promote the education, recruitment and retention of rising junior and senior undergraduate and graduate students in SME studies. All offers of financial assistance are subject to the availability of funds. The DoD will offer these scholarships to individuals who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for training in SME.

Criteria:

  • Citizen of the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the UK
  • 18 years or older
  • Able to complete at least one summer internship at a DoD facility
  • Willing to accept post-grad employment with the DoD
  • GPA of at least 3.0
  • Requesting at least 1.5 years of degree funding prior to graduation
  • Pursuing a technical undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the disciplines listed (see site for details)
