Accessing FAFSA Info with the FSA ID
The US Department of Education implemented the FSA ID (Federal Student Aid ID), a new username and password login system for student and borrower websites (FAFSA.gov, StudentLoans.gov, NSLDS.ed.gov, etc.). The purpose is to improve security measures by discontinuing the use of your personal identifiers as a basis of login (social security number, date of birth).
Students (undergraduate or graduate) and parents of dependents students can create their individual FSA ID here. The FSA ID is comprised of a user-created username and password; once created, it can be maintained and updated as needed.
NOTE: You are ONLY authorized to create an FSA ID for yourself. Therefore, it is illegal for anyone to create an FSA ID for another person (parents should not create an FSA ID for their child; students should not create an FSA ID for either parent). If you wish to assist someone, please make sure that they are in control of the computer process and you are there to provide help with the process. Here is a quote from the FSA ID creation website:
"Only create an FSA ID using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You are not authorized to create an FSA ID on behalf of someone else, including a family member. Misrepresentation of your identity to the federal government could result in criminal or civil penalties."
