Ears to Hear graphic for chapel series

Chapel has long been called the heartbeat of Cedarville University, where students, faculty, and staff gather each weekday for dynamic worship and powerful preaching. Chapel is just one way we help our students grow in their walk with Christ, and most students consider chapel a highlight of their Cedarville education! If you really want to understand Cedarville culture and what makes us "tick," you need to experience chapel.

This year in his chapel series, our president, Dr. Thomas White, is preaching on a selection of parables from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke in “Ears to Hear: Listening to the Stories of Jesus.”

Read today's post to watch a preview of Dr. White's series and learn how to follow along from home.

"When I began my first position teaching fifth grade, my colleagues and I would chat about our college experiences," she explained. Students Encouraged to Get Involved in a Local Church

Thursday, February 25, 2021

ChurchCedarville University is privileged to care for the spiritual growth of some of the best university-aged students on our planet. We take this charge very seriously.

One of the elements in the spiritual growth dynamic here at Cedarville is seeing to it, as best we are able, that each student connects with a local church. The years of their academic training could leave them separated from any type of effective fellowship with the body of Christ, except for what takes place within the boundaries of our campus. Chapel is exciting and distinctive to a Cedarville education, but it does not take the place of the local church.

Read today's post to learn more about local churches that students call home away from home.

4 Reasons Why Teaching Creation at a Christian College Is Important

Tuesday, January 5, 2021

Creation: In the BeginningWhen it comes to their science departments, most Christian universities and colleges either ignore the issue of creation and Genesis altogether, or they promote theistic evolution or some other harmonization of Genesis. There are only a handful of schools that believe that Genesis is historically accurate and forms a foundation for science, the Bible, and Christian education. In today's post, Dr. John Whitmore, Professor of Geology at Cedarville University, shares four reasons why Cedarville holds true to a biblical, literal six-day Creation, and why we always will.

How Important Is a University's Doctrinal Statement?

Thursday, November 14, 2019

Bible text close upLike your local church, Christian colleges all have a statement of beliefs. As you research and visit different institutions with your student, how important is it to consider each college's doctrinal statement?

First, know that a doctrinal statement provides the general framework within which the university will be offering its education. It is a good idea to review the statements (most are posted online) to assure you are comfortable with the direction. If you have questions about what you read, this is a great opportunity to involve your pastor to provide insights.

Second, ask Christian universities if their faculty sign the doctrinal statement as a condition of employment. Not all do. Knowing that faculty will be teaching in line with the institution's stated beliefs provides a point of accountability to you as a parent. Are you comfortable that the faculty at the university will uphold the beliefs that are most important to your family?

Several years ago, we conducted a study related to parents' use of the Cedarville University website. We made an interesting — and candidly, unexpected —finding. Parents were more likely to search terms related to the University's doctrinal commitments and focus on spiritual growth than any other topics.

In today's post, Dr. Jason Lee, Dean of the School of Biblical and Theological Studies, provides insight about the importance of Cedarville's Doctrinal Statement and how it informs Cedarville's approach to Christ-centered higher education.

Cedarville Receives High Marks in Student Survey

Friday, September 13, 2019

Dr. Jason Lee talking with female and male studentIf you really want to know what sets Cedarville apart, you should listen to those who know us best – our students!

Last spring, we asked students to rate Cedarville on five important scales related to their classes, professors, and spiritual growth. The results overwhelmingly validated that what we say about the University matches students’ experience.

Overall, Cedarville earned a 4.63 ranking (out of 5.0) from the more than 500 students who participated in the survey. The statement “My classes have been taught from a biblical worldview” earned a perfect 5-star ranking from students. The remaining statements earned scores of 4.56 to 4.65, including:

  • Cedarville University has helped me grow in my walk with Christ.
  • Cedarville academics are marked by excellence.
  • My professors have demonstrated care for me as a person.
  • My academic program is preparing me well for a career.

As a university, we are encouraged that students affirmed what we’ve always known to be true: Cedarville is doing a great job of providing excellent academics in submission to biblical authority.
