How Important Is a University's Doctrinal Statement?

Tuesday, December 13, 2022

Bible text close upLike your local church, Christian colleges all have a statement of beliefs. As you research and visit different institutions with your student, how important is it to consider each college's doctrinal statement?

First, know that a doctrinal statement provides the general framework within which the university will be offering its education. It is a good idea to review the statements (most are posted online) to assure you are comfortable with the direction. If you have questions about what you read, this is a great opportunity to involve your pastor to provide insights.

Second, ask Christian universities if their faculty sign the doctrinal statement as a condition of employment. Not all do. Knowing that faculty will be teaching in line with the institution's stated beliefs provides a point of accountability to you as a parent. Are you comfortable that the faculty at the university will uphold the beliefs that are most important to your family?

Several years ago, we conducted a study related to parents' use of the Cedarville University website. We made an interesting — and candidly, unexpected —finding. Parents were more likely to search terms related to the University's doctrinal commitments and focus on spiritual growth than any other topics.

In today's post, you'll read about the importance of Cedarville's Doctrinal Statement and how it informs Cedarville's approach to Christ-centered higher education.

Athletics at Cedarville

Thursday, November 17, 2022

Yellow Jacket in front of trackAt Cedarville, we do athletics very differently from other universities. Yes, our student-athletes train and compete hard to win on the court, field, or track. But that's not the most important thing. At Cedarville, our athletes use their sport for Kingdom impact. They pray for and with their opponents, take the Gospel around the world on missions trips, and make Christ known by the way they play and interact with teammates, fans, and officials.

Watch this video and hear from some of our student-athletes. You'll discover that Cedarville Athletics is like no other.

This is what your future Cedarville student will experience as an athlete or fan!

A Bold, Biblical Approach to Geology

Thursday, November 3, 2022

Rock formationsAt Cedarville, we approach the study of geology differently from most universities – even ones that are identified as "Christian." As with every program we offer, our geology program boldly acknowledges the Bible as the ultimate framework for research and study, without sacrificing academic excellence. We are unashamed to adhere to a literal, six-day account of creation and recognize God as the Creator of all life. We are honored to be an invited exhibitor at Answers in Genesis’ annual college expo.

Regularly, Dr. John Whitmore, Professor of Geology, leads a group of students on a trip to the Grand Canyon, where they examine geological evidence that supports the biblical account of Creation and Noah's Flood. Read today's post to watch a video to get a taste of this incredible trip.

This bold, biblically integrated education is exactly what your student will experience at Cedarville University in every course, in every major. We invite you to visit campus and see for yourself!
